LG Seeks One or Two Blawgers

[The positions have now been filled.  Expect an announcement tomorrow.]

Legal Geekery is looking for one or two more blawgers to join the ranks of the overworked and underpaid.

“But JOSH, but JOSH,” I hear you say, “why would I want to write for you when I already have my own blog?”

I’m so glad you asked that question.

1. We’ve Already Found Your Readers

I’m assuming that you write your blawg because you have some interesting ideas that you want to share with people1  How many people DO you actually impart your wisdom upon on a monthly basis?  Check out our traffic stats broken down by month:

legal-geekery-traffic-stats

That’s a pretty significant amount of traffic by most standards, especially in the blawg world.  Your voice can finally be heard!

In addition to the web traffic, we have 1300+ Twitter friends who love to hear us babble microblog about cool law-related stuff.

Forecast:  The small decline in traffic over the past few months is entirely our fault and it’s because we’re not blogging regularly enough.  That’s why we need you.  I can all but guarantee you that after we’ve added the new bloggers and good and fresh content comes more regularly, that line is going to increase significantly.

2. We’ve Got a Professional-Looking Blog

Come on, admit it — you dig the site, right?  You’ll definitely come across as more legitimate than you would by using a wordpress.com domain with a cookie cutter theme and bad plugins.2  We’ve got total autonomy here to do whatever we want with the site.

3. Google Loves Us (And So Do Other Blawgs!)

Why am I mentioning this?  Well, LG has a PageRank of 43 and is crawled by Google very frequently.  This is probably because over 4000 external sites have linked back to us.  These links, coupled with our content, make Google think that we’re an authority on certain subject areas and therefore we rank high in searches, real quick.

To give you an example of why this is useful:  I passingly mentioned family guy in a post about a month ago and since then we’ve averaged about 500 hits per week from people searching Google for “family guy.”

What Does This Mean For You?

Well, for instance, if you had read SCOTUSBlog on the 26th and made a post along the lines of, “Montejo v. Louisiana Overrules Jackson v. Michigan!” There’s a pretty good chance that a lot of people looking for a summary of that case or thoughts about it would have found your post.  The kind of bloggers we’re looking for are the kind of people who are excited by that prospect, and therefore want to put out fresh, quality content.

Qualifications

We’re willing to bend a little bit on these, so if you don’t neatly fall into the requirements, feel free to apply anyway.

  • Law Student or junior associate
  • Minimum of 3-4 posts (~175+ words) per week, with obvious exceptions for exams, vacations, etc.
  • Inherent geekiness with respect to the law and/or other subjects
  • Understanding that this is an unpaid position.4

Bonuses

These are not required, but if you have them, you should mention them in your application:

  • Experience with Wordpress
    • Experience blogging on any platform
  • Coding, graphic design, or typesetting background
  • Marketing experience
  • Knowledge of SEO or SEM

How to Apply

To apply for a position, please prepare and send all of the following to legalgeekery [at] gmail [dot] com:

  1. A short paragraph or two about yourself and why you’d be a good match for LG
  2. A sample blog post or a link to a post on your blog.  Law-related posts preferred but not required.
  3. Your resume, which hopefully will include your contact information.  If you’re a student and worried about your grade anonymity, you can edit your rank/gpa out.  We’re significantly more interested in your experience.

Thanks for your time and we’ll try to get in touch with all applicants as soon as possible. We’re looking forward to having you begin the next chapter of Legal Geekery with us.

  1. If I’m wrong and you write your blog to make money, you should probably look elsewhere. []
  2. Nothing against those blogs — just sayin’, aesthetics matter. []
  3. Certain to improve with more frequent updating! []
  4. After a month-long trial run, we’ll discuss giving you an equity position depending on your performance.  Please keep in mind though that LG is very difficult to monetize due to the audience.  There’s not a whole lot of things to sell to law students and young attorneys, but we’re still working on a business model with which your help will be invited and appreciated.  We’re also open to arrangements where you can promote your own legal-related services, and we’ll give you a full-size spot on the about page where you can link back to your own blog and/or your website.
