Belated Blog Action Day: Poverty

by Joshua Auriemma on October 23, 2008

Blog Action Day was last week. Coincidentally, it was the same day that our rough drafts for law review were due, so LG is celebrating Belated Blog Action Day.

What is Blog Action Day: Poverty, you ask? Well, a bunch of bloggers got together and decided to make a post about poverty. The LG analog, of course, being pro bono.

Having been homeless, I am always a bit weary of giving things to “charity.” The main reason for this is that I lived in a shelter and never saw any of this food or clothing that presumably ends up somewhere. Okay, I’m not saying that you shouldn’t give food or clothes to charity.  What I am saying is that I feel a lot more useful donating my time to pro bono work.

I know a lot of 1Ls may be thinking, “but I’m just a 1L, how can I do any useful pro bono work?”  Well, it may be true that you’re a 1L (otherwise why did you say that?), but you can definitely be a useful asset.   It’s now late October, and by now, you should have a firm grasp over how to perform legal research. Here at Penn State, we have The Miller Center for Public Interest Advocacy.  Our inboxes are occasionally spammed with lawyers seeking the assistance of law students.   Your law school may have a VITA branch, homeless outreach program, a refugee clinic, etc.  If you don’t know about these opportunities, go out and look for them.

If I can’t get you with altruistic reasons (p.s. you will feel good about yourself after helping someone out with their legal problems), how about this: I’ve interviewed with quite a few firms, and one of the only commonalities that I can think of between BIGLAW and mid-size firms is that I can’t think of one round of interviews where someone didn’t spend a decent chunk of time asking about the pro bono work on my resume.  Generally, this line of questioning is followed by accounts of their own pro bono experience.

So what’s the bottom line?  Get out and do something useful, because you’re in a great position to help out someone in your community that deserves your help, and who literally may not be able to get any if you and your friends don’t help.
